Automated Stator Pipe Internal Blasting Unit

Requirements

Industry:
Oilfield equipment manufacturing

Application:
The system shall grit blast the I.D. (internal diameter) of various sized stator pipes ranging from 1-3/4” to 12” internal diameter and from 3’ to 23’ in length. The blast should provide a deep anchor profile and white metal cleaning (SSPC-SP5). The system should align the pipe placed on an entrance rack and eject the pipe to an exit rack when completed.

Equipment Solution:
A production rate of 15 minutes per joint working 24 hours a day was required. An enclosed room with pneumatic doors was custom designed to contain the blast. A screw auger was fit to run the entire length of the room to return the steel grit to a bucket elevator, classifying system and storage hopper. The storage hopper sat over a 6 cubic foot capacity blast vessel. It was required by the customer that the system should only require one operator. The operator used a remote control station that utilized PLC, control systems and HMI touch screen to operate the equipment. Once the pipe was in place, the operator could place the system into “Auto Mode” and the pipe would automatically blast and blow down the pipe while the operator proceeded to load the next stators onto the entrance racks.

Part Handling:
The project included entrance racks that could hold up to 10 additional pipes. The operator would activate an entrance gate. Linear rollers would move the pipe into the start position. Once the blast room doors were opened, the pipe could be automatically rolled into place in the blast enclosure. After the blast procedure concluded, the operator would activate the doors using the touch screen and activate the pipe kickers to remove the stator from the blast enclosure. Safety gates would stop the pipe after exiting the blast enclosure. These gates could be lowered by the operator using the touch screen or by an external push button installed by the facility owner.

Advantages & Selling Features:
PLC controls and limit sensors allow the system to be operated manually or be placed in automatic mode to optimize production. All reclaim equipment was rated for steel grit reclamation.
